My Brother's Keeper - President Obama to launch major new effort to help young minority men

By Zachary A. Goldfarb, Published: February 11

President Obama will launch a significant new effort Thursday to bolster the lives of young minority men, seeking to use the power of the presidency to help a group of Americans whose lives are disproportionately affected by poverty and prison.

The “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative will bring foundations and companies together to test a range of strategies to support such young men, taking steps to keep them in school and out of the criminal justice system, a White House official said. Obama will also announce a more vigorous program to evaluate policies and publicize results to school systems around the country.

:SuN026:maybe he can help some old ones too?
hear-hear! best, however, would be if them "old one" stepped to this program seeking to "mentor" as well as to, yes, seek "help".

but, i suppose, i should read to see just how "the plan" is to be laid out. given the way that government "works" toward the common denominator, i'll not be surprised if the initiative, while sounding good, just barely misses being actually effective ... but maybe that's just cynicism born of having been around for over half a century!

{must not be cynical - must not be cynical - must not be cynical}
An administration official said the “My Brother’s Keeper” effort will consist of two main parts. First, the official said, businesses and foundations will join together to test strategies aimed at “making sure children arrive at school ready to learn and reducing negative interactions with the criminal justice system.”
truancy cops? escorts to school? transportation, maybe? going to school is a good thing; hope the curriculum encourages them to learn, rather than to be a center for indoctrination into the blue color world. (what's a positive "interaction with the criminal just system"?? guard? lawyer?)

{must not be cynical - must not be cynical - must not be cynical}
Second, Obama will launch an internal administration effort to more rigorously evaluate what programs work best at helping young minority males. The Education and Justice departments, for example, recently updated guidelines provided to school districts on the most effective disciplinary policies.
...er... "disciplinary policies" first? again; how about intellectually engaging curricula into something in addition to blue color drudgery?

{must not be cynical - must not be cynical - must not be cynical}
The administration official said the new measures will not cost more money and will include Republicans working on criminal justice reform, religious leaders and corporate executives.
"republicans working on criminal justice reform"??!! the fox making things "better" in the hen house? i sure hope there is some other focus than on "discipline" and "the criminal justice system" ... "religious leaders"?? "corporate executives"?? **{must not be cynical - must not be cynical - must not be cynical}** education over indoctrination, please? (on a lighter note: what are republicans going to be doing to "work... on religious leaders and corporate executives"?? :wink: <grin>)

praying for a good outcome! fingers, toes, eyes, hair, teeth crossed in hopes!!

it ain't beatin up on president brother obama; he don't work in a vacuum. and he must appease lots of folks! but good on him for stepping up like this!!!
