Cubs legend Ernie Banks has died at 83
Ernie Banks, the Hall of Fame shortstop who was so beloved by Chicago Cubs fans that they gave him the nickname "Mr. Cub," has died, his wife Liz told the Chicago Tribune. He was 83.
Banks played for the Cubs from 1953 to 1971, hitting 512 home runs and driving in 1,636 runs while earning 11 All-Star selections and two MVPs (1958-59). He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1977.
Beyond his accomplishments, Banks was a fan favorite for his personality and love of the game — he was famous for saying "Let's play two!" when he arrived at the ballpark on a nice day.
