My son is 12 years old. He has a cellphone. I got him a cell phone last summer. There was a rash of child abductions and molestations. My son has to wait for me at school about 30mins until I get off from work and pick him up. I was scared out of my mind last year when I got into an accident and I couldn't get in touch with him to let him know I was running late. The school office was closed when I got there an hour and a half later, and I freaked. When I got to the school I couldn't find him, I started calling everyone I knew (I had no one to pick him up for me that time of day) and no way to contact him to let him know what was going on. He decided to walk to a friends house to use the phone, but when he got there no one was home so he walked up to Walmart about a mile away and called me on my cell.

That's when I knew I had to get him a cellphone. He has a very basic phone that is on my plan so I can monitor his calls online along with mine. He has no texting capabilities and crazy ring tones. He has to only use it for communication with family. It has worked wonderfully, since I sat down and explained to him why I felt he needed a cellphone.

Wow, that's scary.

But still, you provided your son the cell phone for his safety and security (which is understable). There are some kids that just expect to have a cell phone for no reason other than to look cool or talk to their friends.

I can remember when I was in High school, I used to be upset about us not being able to have cell phones in school. The only reason why I thought we should be able to have cell phones (in and out of school), was in case of an emergency.

Today it has become a distraction - a reason not to go to class, and not to do any work. I have only come to learn that at any given time, these children are not facing emergencies. Not only that, but I would like to know - Upon buying children cell phones, do they teach them what to do in case of an emergency?
