Suicide or Murder? Three Years After the Death of Pfc. LaVena Johnson in Iraq, Her Parents Continue Their Call for a Congressional Investigation
    Lavenajohnsonweb

Three years ago, on July 19, 2005, Army Private First Class LaVena Johnson was found dead in Balad, Iraq. Her body was found in a tent belonging to the private military contractor KBR. She had abrasions all over her body, a broken nose, a black eye, burned hands, loose teeth, acid burns on her genitals, and a bullet hole in her head. The Army labeled Johnson’s death a suicide. But her parents never believed that story. They think she was raped and murdered and are now demanding a full congressional investigation into their daughter’s death

    What is Militarism?

The use of organized force/violence to assert the will of one group over another, and the mindset flowing from this position into various aspects of a society.

    Rape in the Military

There are more women serving in the military than ever before, and they're in danger—but not just from combat. Last year, nearly 1,400 women reported being assaulted and raped by their fellow soldiers, in some cases by their commanding officers. The shocking phenomenon is called military sexual trauma, or MST.

Since NOW first aired its investigation into rape and sexual assault in the military last year, the Pentagon has released new reports in which one-third of military women say they've been sexually harassed. And the number of women reporting assault and rape has essentially remained the same—even though the military says it has invested serious resources to combat the problem.

This week NOW on PBS talks to women soldiers who signed up to defend their countries but instead had to defend themselves from assault and rape by their own fellow soldiers. How are these women picking up the pieces of their life after military sexual trauma?

    Why Soldiers Rape
Culture of misogyny, illegal occupation, fuel sexual violence in military

Morris and Burke both show that military language reveals this “unabashed hatred of women” all the time. Even with a force that is now 14 percent female, and with rules that prohibit drill instructors from using racial epithets and curses, those same instructors still routinely denigrate recruits by calling them “*****,” “girl,” “*****,” “lady” and “dyke.” The everyday speech of soldiers is still riddled with sexist insults.

Soldiers still openly peruse pornography that humiliates women. (Pornography is officially banned in the military, but is easily available to soldiers through the mail and from civilian sources, and there is a significant correlation between pornography circulation and rape rates, according to Duke’s Morris.) And military men still sing the misogynist rhymes that have been around for decades. For example, Burke’s book cites this Naval Academy chant:

Misogyny has always been at the root of sexual violence in the military, but two other factors contribute to it, as well: the type of man who chooses to enter the all-volunteer force and the nature of the Iraq War.

WTF - and presumably no gun anywhere nearby either - are these people genuinely mad? How much less like a suicide could that desription possibly be? Plus that sounds way beyond what some guy will do just to get himself satisfied - like acid burns - that's one seriously f*cked-up individual who needs to be caught and put away for ever.

It was done to cover up her murder, the acid destroys any DNA evidence that might identify the killer. Rape in military is very common, my friend's sister in DC is a product of rape... her mother was drugged and raped while in the military, and she subsequently got pregnant-had the baby but didn't report the incident.

Yeah I hear stories like those...It's sick

These people are supposed to "protect" us, just like these corrupt police and they use their authority to take advantage of people.

I tried to enlist into the military and what I had to go through just to get in was terrible. My recruiter was always trying to come over and not to recruit.

I have had people tell me that I was fortunate not to get in because "they rape women in the Army", so I was told.

Well at least that's something - if you can make anything positive out of this - I'd thought the guy had done that while she was still alive.
