Microsoft Kinect started off as Project Natal. It answered the call to inject further innovation into the interactive gaming experience, but it also delivered a very interesting side effect. An example of this is in the video below:
The kinect was quickly hacked and re-purposed into a number of interesting projects. Sample of them can be found from Popular Science magazine (http://www.popsci.com/diy/article/2010-11/five-hacks-free-microsofts-kinect-xbox).
Another project I found interesting was the use of the kinect in a quadrotor robot to avoid objects in the environment:
If you're shopping around for an interesting hardware/hacking project, the kinect might be a good fit if you're interested in robotics or HCI.
