A Michigan state lawmaker has come under fire for responding to data showing educational disparities by saying "we can't make an African-American white."

State Sen. Marty Knollenberg (R) made the comment during a hearing Thursday after seeing state data breaking down academic performance among different demographic groups. The data indicated most students who were struggling were students of color, Knollenberg later told
    WXYZ Detroit.

"You mention why these schools districts fail, and you mention economically disadvantaged and non-white population are contributors to that. And we can’t fix that. We can’t make an African-American white," he said at the meeting. "That's just, it is what it is."

Never mind his bizarre doublespeak ad nauseam...

No apologist for the majority party in power in Lansing can seriously claim that unregulated charter schools are overnight cures for whatever ills plague my states public schools ...

Well, there is no argument about the poor academic performance of black students. It's well documented and no secret. But I don't think statements like, "We can’t make an African-American white...," helps. It's not about making black students white (whatever that means). It's about raising the level of performance and the ability to meet academic standards. Tragically, black students (as a group) are notorious for sub par academic performance when pitted against white and Asian students. Look at the negative comments made by Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia about black students ability to academically compete (Texas U) at top rated universities less than a month ago. Yes it was insulting and racist but what evidence do we have to say he is wrong? What evidence do we have that black students majors and grades are indistinguishable from white and Asian students at MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Cal Tech, Chicago U, Columbia, Penn, Princeton, et al? This disparity should be a major concern and an issue that black Americans need to address.....
