Meditation and Yoga can prove to be as beneficial to Black men as it can be for Black women. It can help balance out an exercise program that includes weight training and aerobic activity such as running and/or swimming. The combination of developing flexibility, strength, stamina and the ability to focus and relax and to reduce stress, is unbeatable. Many men claim that their yoga practice helps their performance and concentration at work, as well as in sports. Some have reported that after several months of practice, they have experienced weight loss and redistribution of fat. Yoga and Meditation also develop body-mind control and connection, which is vital to overall health and intimacy with oneself and others.

As Black men age, we are also subject to a variety of common health problems and risk-factors which often result in insomnia, impotence and prostate conditions, leading to heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Black men may also undergo a male menopause, with changes and disruptions in hormonal levels, similar to the changes Black women undergo. These changes are just not as noticeable as women's changes, at least this is what many are led to believe.

Black men have more muscle mass than Black women, and therefore tend to to have greater tightness and restriction in the hips, shoulders, hamstrings, and groin area. Many sports such as olf and tenis, as well as contact sports, create imbalances as a result of their one-sided natures. Yoga and meditation help to correct these asymmetries.

Your experiences of the world greatly depend upon the health of your nervous system, which is impacted upon by the environment, heredity, and the foods you eat. The practices of yoga and meditation can help strenghten and purify your nervous system so that you may more clearly perceive and interact in the world in a conscious and positive manner.

There are six major forms of yogic practice derived from India, as well as a system of Egyptian Yoga as taught by brother Muata Ashby, that I am familiar with. Each path leads to transformational growth and self-actualization. An individual may be involved in one or more paths, and they are not mutually exclusive. Peace as you seek the journey along your Own Path!

In general, Black men have higher rates of prostate cancer in comparison to Black women. This is a major health concern. Black men also tend to have denser, bulky and tight muscles. Yoga postures can go a long way toward loosening and lenthening those knotty muscles. As Black men approach middle age, health risk-factors increase, and many of us begin to experience prostate problems, especially in colder climates with decreased sunlight. Practicing a variety of yogic postures, particularly forward bends and poses (be careful with squats) that open the pelvis and hips, is preventive health practice for the prostate glands and the lymph glands. The lymphatic system circulates lymph fluid, picks up and eliminates waste throughout the body, and greatly benefits from yoga postures and breathing exercises. The lymphatic system does no move on its own. It has to be pumped by the muscles.

I'm most interested in Kundalini as well as mixing Taoist and Yogic practices.

Do you practice Tai Chi? If so, can you speak regarding its benefits. I used Tai Chi practice (along with kickboxing) when recovering from knee surgery 15 years ago and need to reincorporate it myself.

Not like I should, but I have been taught Taoist Tai Chi.

Pretty interesting stuff :). Very different from tradition Western exercise. I like how these exercises stretch your spine.
