Tens of thousands of South African teachers, nurses and other public sector workers took to the country's streets yesterday to demand better wages in one of the biggest protests since the end of apartheid a decade ago.

In the capital, Pretoria, police said some 25,000 striking public sector workers gathered at the Union Buildings, the seat of government.

Unions put the number at no less than 40,000.

Unions also contend that public sector employees are grossly underpaid with the average gross salaries of police officers, teachers and nurses standing at around 5,000 rand (US$60) per month.
