I am continuing my journey deeper into an aspect of African traditional spiritual traditions and I must say I am excited. If all goes well, I will be entering the djevo in the next upcoming months and coming out closer to Ginen than I am now. As my thoughts are becoming more anxious and focused on my endeavor, I wanted to share and ask your opinion.

In Vodou, one can embark on a lifetime marriage to the spirits similar to a regular union between human spouses. The human spouse devotes at least one night per month where they do not engage in any kind of sexual activity and are generally expected to sleep alone, even if they have another physical marriage with someone. On that night(s), the human's spirit spouse is said to enter their dreams to either consult them, give advice or engage in a kind of dream sex. Also, the human spouse is expected to service the spirit on the spirit's day of the week. In return, the spirit grants special favors and benefits, like health, luck, wealth and other things for a lifetime to their human partner.

    What do you think?

Well...whatever works, I suppose. :what: I guess if you are interested in it, then go for it.

What are you thoughts concerning this?

This topic really fascinates me. I recall reading about these 'spirit marriages' involving shaman. Can I ask if such a union is inherited? that is to say do relatives of yours also have such marriages? Also how did you meet your 'spirit spouse' do they come to you in dreams, visions, or does a certain spirit simply stay on your mind?

I do hope my questions were not too personal and I will understand if you do not feel comfortable answering them. I wish you well on your spiritual journey. I'm on a new one myself. :)

    Hello Marie,

No, your questions are not too personal.

No, the unions in Vodou are not inherited.

I am the first in my family to practice Vodou in a very long time.

One lwa requested marriage via dreams and the other I requested marriage from to accomplish a goal even though with these two lwa, if you marry one you have to marry the other.

I remember a related discussion when I first moved back to Los Angeles.

Since you are married what does your wife think about this?

    Uncle,

Initially there was the jealousy that we humans have and I know once I am married to these lwa, it will be awkward. But Vodou, like most ATRs, is very practical and it's the practicality of it that makes it palatable. As my spouses, these lwa promise protection from life's misfortunes and that extends to my immediate family.

To reject a lwa's request for marriage can have diastrous implications. On the flip, to accept and marry a lwa can provide almost sure guarantee that the lwa will come to your aid at all times. These spirits are real. It is because of the lwa that I was able to owe a multi-million dollar company and become a millionaire less 7 years after I was homeless on the street begging in soup lines. I have received nothing but blessings from my spirits and ancestors.

I hear you. This must explain why I have not been as fortunate. May you stay blessed!

Uncle, I can't imagine you not being as fortunate. I can tell your ancestors have blessed you immensely. May you stay blessed as well. Ayibobo!
