In Suriname the maroons are known for their wood carving skills and vibrant paintings and are a favorite among the tourists and local who buy them to decorate their homes or as souvenirs.

Their motifs bare a distinguishable African connection.

I was always amazed how with the simplest tools they seemingly effortlessly create works of art.

Here are some samples and a video explaining and demonstrating some basic technique:
