London calling: Flint boxer Claressa Shields an Olympian - finally

Claressa Shields, the 17-year-old boxer from Flint, is headed to the London Olympics — finally — after an excruciating week in limbo at the AIBA women's world championships in Qinhuangdao, China.
"She called me up and said, 'Coach?'" said Jason Crutchfield, Shields' coach back in Flint, where the U.S. middleweight champ has spent the last six years training at Berston Field House. "I said, 'Yeah?' Then she said, 'I'm in!'"
And after the two got done screaming, Crutchfield said he told her, 'We got another chance at it. We're gonna take full advantage of it."

Flint's Claressa Shields makes Olympic history

LONDON - For the first time in Olympic history, women’s boxing entered the ring during the London games. Claressa Shields, a Flint native, captured gold on Thursday against Russia’s Nadezda Torlopova with a 19-12 victory.
Despite losing early in the world championships, Shields still managed to qualify for the Olympics.

The 17-year-old danced and slugged her way past her 33-year-old opponent, proving herself to be the best amateur middleweight fighter.
