Libra is the seventh sign of the zodiac, which the Sun transits during the first month of autumn, from about September 23rd to about October 22nd. The symbol for this sign is The Scales; its polarity is positive; its element is air; its quality is cardinal; its ruling planet is Venus; and on the human anatomy Libra rules the kidneys, the adrenal glands, and the skin as an organ of the body.

The communicativeness of the element air combined with the activity of cardinality and the charm of the planet Venus conspire to give the Libran an engaging, sociable, and outgoing personality. The keyword for Libra is balance, and people born under this cardinal air sign feel incomplete without a partner. A psychologist would call them “people-oriented,” or “other-directed”; ordinary people would say they are very unselfish.

Librans are both blessed and cursed as a result of their inherent ability to see both sides of every question. Though this ability makes them valuable as mediators and peacemakers, it often means that they are indecisive and painfully slow in arriving at personal decisions.

Librans – who include not only Sun-sign Librans, but all in whose horoscopes the sign is emphasized – crave peace and harmony above all else. They will often stifle their own feelings and opinions if, indeed, they know what they are – in order to avoid an unpleasant scene. They hate ugliness and disorder, and can become physically ill if their surroundings do not meet their high standards of aesthetic refinement. They may be obsessively concerned with what other people think of them, and go to great lengths to make a good, or even a false impression.

Libran infants are famous for their winning smiles from a remarkably early age, but the demand beneath their overflowing congeniality is constant interaction. As children, Librans learn good manners and the act of sharing more easily than other children because of their need to be liked. If they have a behavior problem, it is that they are too good, too nice, and too willing to please. In later years they may find that they have given in to others so often that they have forgotten what they wanted themselves! Or even who they are! They may have to learn the courage and self-assertiveness that comes so naturally to Aries, Libra’s polar opposite and complementary sign.

The combination of the element air and the influence of Venus often gives the Libran a somewhat androgynous appeal that can be devastating. Although they need and attract partners, they are not particularly physical people, nor are they given to grand passions. They often marry young, and usually more than once. Surprisingly often this will be to another Libra, as if only in their own sign could they find the delicate balance they need, and only in someone just like them could they learn to love themselves.

Their other compatible signs are: Gemini Aquarius, Leo and Sagittarius; Taurus, Scorpio, Virgo and Pisces are neutral, although Taurus and Pisces are potentially better through the shared influence of Venus. Cancer and Capricorn way well be difficult, and with Aries, there polar opposite, there is both attraction and tension. In all cases, however, the success of the relationship will depend upon the interaction between the horoscopes of the individuals, and their willingness to compromise (which, in the sign Libra, is very strong).

As the sign of justice, Libra has a natural affinity for the law; but their ability to anticipate others’ reactions makes them excel in the military as well. Their love for music, balance and beauty (the gift of Venus), combined with their understanding of form and structure (the gift of Saturn) gives them a natural inclination toward such fields as literature, songwriting, and the visual arts. Saturn, the planet of discipline, is exalted in Libra, the sign of balance.

The sign is especially associated with architecture, sculpture, drafting, art, design, and interior decorating; crafts such as dressmaking, jewelry-making and weaving; and all fields concerned with the beautification of people and their surroundings. The Libra love of justice and interest in law may draw them into politics – despite their tender sensibilities – if other indications in the horoscope point in that direction.

The colors of Libra are dark green and blue; its birthstones are the emerald and the opal; and its day of the week is Friday, which is ruled by Venus.

The following are some prominent African-Americans who were born under the sign Libra:

India Arie, Art Blakey, Toni Braxton, Shirley Caesar, Ray Charles, Johnnie Cochran, John Coltrane, Dizzy Gillespie, Richard Claxton Gregory, Bryant Gumbel, Moses Gunn, Donny Hathaway, Jesse Jackson, Beverly Johnson, Calvin Lockhart, Les McCann, Marilyn McCoo, Wynton Marsalis, Winnie Mandela, Johnny Mathis, Thelonius Monk, Elijah Muhammad, William Raspberry, Patrice Rushen, Al Sharpton, Bishop Desmond Tutu, Congressman Alan Wheat and David Winfield...

One explanation for Libra's appreciation of beauty and harmony is found in its planetary ruler, the gracious Venus, queen of all things lovely and pleasurable...

Venus is the Goddess of Love, and so relationships come easily to Libra - and Libra sees them everywhere. Not only in the obvious realms of human romance and marriage, but in the subtle relationship between musical notes and the balance between colors and shapes in a piece of artwork...

Balance in color and shape produces beauty; balance in music produces harmony; and balance in social affairs produces justice. The Libra individual is keenly aware of the importance of balance in every aspect of life, and is pained when things are out of harmony. Like The Scales that are its symbol, the Libra native moves through life attempting to put things "right."

Although Gemini has a reputation for being talkative, Librans can be quite talkative also, although for different reasons. For Libra, relationships are their reason for living, and they consider any moment not spent relating as wasted time...

Naturally, being an air sign, Libra's preferred method of feeling connected with others is through conversation; in the exchange of ideas and opinions, Libra is convinced it has touched the soul of another. Their goal is not to dominate the conversation, but merely to keep it going...indefinitely. In fact, the average Libran is so eager to maintain the conversation that he doesn't care what the subject is, and will happily follow the other person's lead in terms of content...

However, don't try to turn a deaf ear. Libra will sense your disinterest, interpret it as a withdrawal from the relationship, and deftly attempt to recapture your involvement by asking questions to draw you back in...

Some of the greatest musical geniuses of our time were born under the sign Libra. Consider: Thelonious Monk (10/10/'17), Dizzy Gillespie (10/21/'17), Art Blakey (10/11/'19), John Coltrane (9/23/'26), Ray Charles (9/23/'30), Les McCann (9/23/'35), and Wynton Marsalis (10/19/'61)...

And three very famous African-American civil rights activists are Librans...Jesse Jackson (10/8/'41), Al Sharpton (10/3/'54), and Johnnie Cochran (10/3/'37)...who happen to share the same birthdate!
