A New York state lawmaker is facing criticism this week after he called out the abortion industry’s targeting of African Americans for abortions.

State Assemblyman Ron Castorina Jr., R-Staten Island, told lawmakers Tuesday that abortion has become an “African American genocide” in New York, Syracuse.com reports. He urged lawmakers to oppose a bill that would codify Roe v. Wade in state law, allowing abortion for basically any reason at any time in pregnancy.

During the assembly debate Tuesday, Castornia’s remarks drew harsh backlash from pro-abortion lawmakers. Some called the statement “ridiculous” and others walked out of the chamber, according to the report. The debate became heated, and at one point, a Democratic assemblyman told a Republican assemblyman to “shut up,” the report states.

Afterward, Castorina told Timer Warner Cable News, “This chamber likes to look at things through the prism of race and gender all the time, but when it’s inconvenient, when I brought up an issue through the prism of race, that’s insulting?”
