inspired by her book "The Moon Is Always Female"...everything from cover to cover, and one poem in particular..."Limited But Fertile Possibilities Are Offered By This Brochure"....

    ****************************************************

an hour and 1/2 before showtime
    i wandered into the bookstore
    to roam among the titles
    and perhaps find the cliff
    notes for the meaning of
    the universe...

there would be a pop quiz,
    of that i was certain...

    the aisles were crammed
    with other lovers
    of the written word...

    the aroma of fresh
    brewed coffee led me
    down an empty row
    of art history...
    western civilization...
    philosophy

    &

    poetry....
    and, poetry...
    and, and... poetry...

    and then i found
    her, misplaced,
    out of
    order, between
    Cummings
    and Eliot...

    this brilliant,
    brazen woman
    who spoke to me, not
    gently, from the shelf
    proclaiming
    "the moon is always female"

    i had to know her

    who was this woman, this
    poet/prophet speaking with such
    authority on all things
    lunar?

and how could she know of
    my secret obsession with
    the night sky?

with my latte in my right
    hand
    and her words tightly
    clasped to my left side
    i moved quickly to
    an oversized chair

    beads of perspiration
    upon my brow

    anticipation beating
    furiously inside my chest

    i was oblivious to the
    other patrons, and the
    observance of basic
    etiquette.....

    with my spectacles on
    i dove, nose first....
    and slipped between
    her pages...

    flipping anxiously
    to the table of contents
    to enjoy a preview
    of her wisdom

    and there it was,
    all of it

    the answers to questions
    i grappled with, but
    didn't dare utter out loud...
    the truth about
    woman~nature that
at 45, i had only begun to
    understand

    Marge peeled back the
    skin of my emotions
    and exposed the raw
    nerves ...
    and all this
    time i thought i was
    a "femme moderne"

    i immersed myself in
    her words and hardly
    sipped for fear of
    losing my grip on
    the most sane thing
    i'd ever....

    (there were moments
    she made me gasp;
    her words, so honest
    she spoke with no
    shame)

    Marge was patient
    with me...and explained
why my cycles, times and seasons
    might ever be void of
    precise rhymes and reasons...

    and why i must welcome
    the coming of my flow
    as willingly, and graciously
    as i must
    let it go...

    Alyce:

I do not know the work of Marge Piercy, but I tell you seeing a post by Alyce on Destee, gets my excited attention!! Your "Woman in the Attic...Rumblins' from your Hope Chest" are powerful, prophetic, insightful, inspiring and a whole bunch of other descriptives I can't even think of!!

If Ms. Marge is as tight as Sista Alyce, I'll be looking her up too!

    Peace and Blessings,
    JNubian

    Ms. A...

    ...I don't think I need
    to keep on tellin' you
    how amazing you are,
    because you have to
    already know, by now.
    Just, keep blessin' me
(and I know that 'me' stands
    out, and seems kinda selfish
but we all get that way
    from time to time) with
    you, lady...:D

    I see you

    sitting there without a care..

the aroma of freshly brewed coffee floating in the air around you as you settle in the comfort of an oversized chair with her words held lovingly in your hands..

tuning the world out and getting lost in her wisdom...

    a soul connection...
