when fear put my heart in a vice grip
and tried to choke me moment after moment
when people scared me and
I scared me even more

running set me free

when the rivers of anxiety tried to drown me
and the panic took my ability to really see
fight or flight feeling
paralyzing me

running set me free

when darkness was every inch of my world
chest felt like a lead mountain
so heavy, no reason to live
wanted so much to be dead and tried

running set me free

when the world was confusing, abusing
being the only one I had and the lone
one to help me, not to mention
all that lonely, hurting me

running set me free

then there was the stress, yes
caught between rigidity and desire -
mess, only true outcome was
the toll on my body and mind but

running set me free

now I look down from
this wall I stand on
all that terror
that other person
so far below
so long ago

running set me free

the wind on my body still
turns my sod into brick
the feeling I'm flying will always
quiet my scream into a whisper
wanting to run forever, to die this
way, always helps me grow

running saved my life
