    There is also Gimp, Pinta, Raw Therapee, Inkscape, Image Magick and Xara Xtreme

    Xara might be dead, but really Gimp (amazing scripting capabilities), Krita, and Inkscape really seem to be leading the pack right now for this space.

    Image Magick is really popular for processing images in back-ends, and really it deserves it. It can do amazing things, and I wouldn't even be the least bit surprised if this forum used it.

    These are all good examples of open source software meeting everyday needs.
