What is the purpose of the United Nations, if its Members violate the rules they've established? What are the consequences, if any, of these violations? Does it mean anything at all that Kofi Annan has said the Iraq War was / is illegal?

Just like with "free trade", the US, while a major part of the UN, will not follow rules if it does not feel like it and few people, or countries can do anything about it.

Kofi Annan calling the Iraq war "illegal" would have caused the country that started it to be punished in some way.....if it was any other country in the world than the US.

    Thats my take.

Did Annan's comments catch any of us off guard? For those of us who have been following the "news" ever since 9/11, we know that what the Bush Administration did was "illegal" according to the UN. Colin Powell might be taking issue with Annan's bold and very public opinion, but he knows within his heart that he's telling the truth because of his strong opposition to the war against Iraq when it was just a notion expressed by Bush and his good ole boyz (including Condi).

I didn't read the article (but saw it on the news this morning) so the answer to my following question might have been addressed. So if the UN believes that what the U.S. and its allies did was illegal, then what can be done about it and who has the authority to do it? If someone breaks the law and is found guilty in a court of law, then someone has to go to jail don't they?

By the way, speaking of breaking the law, what ever happened to Martha Stewart? Is she actually serving her sentence in a penitentiary or is she under "house arrest"? Anybody know?

    Peace,
    Queenie :spinstar:

not only did kofi Anaan speak on our war in iraq being illegal, but he also spoke last week about the importance of the rule of law.

He pointed out how we only obey the rule of law when it's convenient for us. it also important to know that the uN is as effective as it's biggest/most powerful members. When we dissent from the ranks and go our own way, the UN is powerless to stop us.

Therein lies a fundamental weakness of the UN; limited policing power.

Family ... isn't it interesting that the United States can be found guilty of breaking the UN laws, yet there were no sanctions or anything?

Clap! Clap! Thank you, Mr. Annan, for stating the obvious.

Approximately 1.4 million Iraqis (mostly women and children)
are dead as a result of two invasions by the United States.

    The truth?...

"Kofi Annan is little more than an ink cartridge in the pen of the Power Elite." - (Lokman)

"The United Nations is a cabal of fascists, warlords, dictators and demigods,
and a division of the real 'shadow government' whose modus operandi is
gradualism by deception. It is an artillery shell in a Howitzer aimed at
sovereign citizens throughout the world." - (Lokman)
