Black Sports : Kobe makes records wilt

brother Omowale, Elvin was 6-foot-9... Willis Reed was 6-foot-9... Dave Cowes was 6-foot-8... Wes Unseld was 6-foot-7... These men played CENTER in the mid-to-late '60's and early '70's... Even Kareem was susceptible to being pushed around by Wilt, because he was slight of build, though measurements of his height vary from 7ft 2inches to 7ft 4inches... There were few comparable big men to make Wilton Norman Chamberlain sweat in those days, and that includes Bill Russell, who Wilt put up big numbers against, though his TEAMS usually lost to the Celtics...

As per the handle, you name a few MORE guys who could handle, so what??? Did these guys make up the majority of great players in that era??? In today's game, the handle is a prerequisite for most backcourt and wing players, particularly the superstars... Besides that, I stand by what I said about Dr. J and Gervin... They came out of the ABA in the mid-1970's, along with a number of other wonderful players, but we were talking NBA players in Wilt's era... Wilt's era was not no mid-1970's, brother...

As per my comments about Elgin Baylor being "out da door" IN the '69 series, he was injured(as you pointed out), and Keith Ericksson logged most of the minutes at small forward for the Lakers in that, and subsequent seasons, until Jimmy Mack came on board about 1971... Again, I said he was out da door meaning that he was finished as an effective player in that series, and subsequent seasons...

As per Willis Reed's career rebounding totals, he averaged 13.6 rpg over an 11 season career shortened by his injuries... BTW, brother, Willis Reed and the Knicks started this whole trend toward strong defensive play, and a Phil Jackson, who was a member of those teams, would support that assertion - history itself would support that assertion...and your stats machine would support that assertion... They THE FIRST National Basketball Association team in the 24-second shot clock era to hold teams below 100 points for a season... The Chants of DEE-FENCE you hear around NBA arenas today started at MSG, brotherman... Aint no homer stuff...

Astute analysis!

I'm glad! You never know when someone is actually offended or not. I respect you as an elder, and know what it is like to look back at a past era. In fact every player I grew up watching in the mid to late 80s and 90s have all retired, except Mutumbo, who is now the oldest player in the league. The players currently in the NBA now are a new generation to me.

Well brother Pan,
I coached in LA prior to moving and a few of my guys are playing at the high school or college level now. I admit that the game has changed and some of these brothers are bigger and stronger...but a lot of this change actually occured when the NBA and ABA emerged....but that was not the issue of this post..

You have to understand, I graduated from UCLA in 1979...class of Bird and Magic, one year after Marques Jihnson, who was a local star that became NCAA Player of the year..I played in high school against Freeman Williams...who later led the nation in scoring at Portland State...at manual Arts HS Freemon used to score over 60 points on numerous occasions...lighted us up at Fairfax for 65 one night...and hs ball is running time...

As far as lack of ball handling skills....not in the cases of Raymond Lewis, Roy Hamilton or Brad Holland...and locals such as David Greenwood, Bill Laimbeer, and the bay's Bill Cartwright were BIG men who made an impact at the next level, as did Kiki Vandeweghe and Reggie Theus...Theus was one of the most prolific scorers during his NBA career.....and I don't know how many of you are familiar with a guard that played for new Jersey, that was a teammate of Marques named Darwin Cook...defensive specialist, good ballhandler and assist man...Greenwood, Cartwright and Laimbeer played on CHAMPIONSHIP teams at Detroit and Chicago during the 80s...I believe Theus now is a coach and Vandeweghe is a high level executive with the Nuggets...

All these guys i'm talking about balled in souther Cal high schools between 1971-76...they were stars of the 80s...check their career stats and they match with many of the stars today...it was THIS generation of ballers which set the present standard, following Dr. J, Gervin, Big "O', Wilt, etc...

Just go back and see who MJ and Magic site as their influences...

Some folks just wanna skip over the 70s...mention the 80s and a sidenote and go to what they think they know (today) without looking at the development of the game..

Bruh..I lived and played and coached and witnessed the game progress from a white boy sport to a sport dominated by the Biggest Baddest Brothers in the game....and am aware of the current group of High Schoolers coming up now...

I got one at Fairfax now...Chase Stanback....

peace,
"O".

(watch out for my next addition to the family forum)

I was wondering if anyone saw the show with Stepen A. Smith monday when he was talking about Kobe being in the top 4 greatest of all time...

Brother Pan, he is already in that discussion...but Smith cited the other players to be,

Wilt Chamberlain
Elgin Baylor
Michael Jordan,

In no particular order. So, I decided to accept his point and all the other talk about folks giving Wilt fits, yadda yadda I'm just gonna dismiss as "trash talk" that is not for serious discussion...

You are right, let's see where Kobe Bryant is at when his career is ovah...
