Keepers Of The Grease
(a phrase coined by my gurl Alyce ;))

Keepers of the grease
We are
Once nappy-headed
Now DARK & LOVELY

Passing on the sacred jar
We are
Fertilizing the hair roots
Of our daughters
With wisdom

Touching up the new growth
We are
Weaving their hair strands
With the fibres of our knowledge

That spreads like AFRO-SHEEN dreams
So that we-she may be seen
In a different light

Microscopic braided lights
Interlock it rows of canes
In the cotton fields
Of black beauty
Perming our history
And overcoming the shame

Passing hot comb torches
We are
With the generation
Of hands
Doing hair

Sweetened with a honey-blond crown
We are
On top of a smooth, black, silky mane

Layered with a burgundy HENNA wash
We are
Drop curls permanently fixed in place

With HAIR FOOD
Nappy-glued

"The Keepers Of The Grease"
We are...
