Just Colored Folk Let Us Be

Every hear about the stories of old told?
bout them colored folks of country statue
from Louisiana swamps to Georgia’s southern
belles to tall long drawn tales. From the
Mississippi River to the ditches of hanging
men that made you shiver while hooded
white men burned crosses crimson blood
    they had to deliver.

I grew up in the south from LA parks to
long roads and pitch black was dark. I
spent each summer in those Mississippi
fields, shucking corn and spinning wheels
walking on the wrong side of the street
cause we weren’t allowed people to greet
    going to the
    back door
    back of the bus
back of the line all of the time.
for we was less then free, we were just
colored folk jus let us be

As I child I did not understand the hate
and racism that exist, because in the city
I played with everyone and no one ever
had a fit. I had white friends yellow and
brown no one cared what was what or
what color abound. I did not like the
things I saw they scared and frightened me
to see how people really are and yet those
things still happen no matter what country
    or city you are.

I still believed the dream that Martin had
and when I saw different it made me really
sad, It’s a shame that this still must go on
and yet we say we are free for what? there is
no love adorned. If things don’t change in time
to come then we will be no different then days
of old, just still lost only older less then free
we just colored folks let us be.
