    Just Because We were Black

    Just because we were black
To the back of the bus we had to go
    And because of that fact
False humility we had to show

    Just because we were black
We were told not fully human we were not
And we were expected to act
In ignorance, by showing intelligence many were shot

But just because we were black
God gave us the will to endure
    Through racism, torture, and lack
Guiding us to new integrity’ shore

    Just because we were black
From certain water fountains we couldn’t drink
We had to constantly watch our back
They even tried to control what we say and think

    Just because we were black
For years we were denied our true history
And it was hidden from us many a fact
About the contributions of persons of ebony

    Just because we are black
We have continued the race we’ve had to run
But because we are black, know this fact
By God’s grace and mercy we will overcome
