I prefer post bop. John Coltrane is my favorite jazz musician.

Aight. Trane was an absolute beast. But he was also heavily influenced by Eric Dolphy...in his most free-form avant guarde music.

Hard to say who's my fav. It's just so many artists out there. Im a musician so I had to study these artists...I can name a few tho...

    Early Miles (the combos)
    Thelonious Monk
    Charles Mingus
    Charlie Parker
    Pharoah Sanders
    Trane
    Eric Dolphy
Julius Hemphill (Check out "Drunk on God" 18mins of the best writing ever)
    Kenny Barron
    Bobby Hutcherson
Some young cats like David Binney, Ben Allison, Mark Turner

In his later career he was also influenced by Ornette Coleman, wasn't he? I read a chapter about Coltrane in a book on jazz I have. He was a deep/troubled man.
    Whoa.
I'm not really into smooth jazz but it's all right. It's too 'happy' and 'safe' for me. I'm not really into most bebop or pre-1940s jazz either.

Yeah, I'd rather listen to what's going on outside like nature or whatever is going on in the neighborhood. But I do have a few songs here and there that I like.
