Like so many other African states, Nigeria is the creation of European imperialism. Its very name after the great Niger River the country's dominating physical feature was suggested in the 1890s by British journalist Flora Shaw who later became the wife of colonial governor Frederick Lugard

Yes, Nigeria is a combo of "Niger + Area"
hence the name-Nigeria. (Nigeria - Meaning the Area of the Niger)

it wasn't until 1914 the country was amalgamated,

Gee, and we're over here wondering if we can recapture OUR African culture. The very name Africa is of european extraction but we know it by no other name.
