Sister Destee, I was commenting on another thread and was about to insert a smiley, when I came across this one :
    :em3000:

As much as I love you and this site, the first word that came to my mind when I saw it was "blackface". As since that was my first reaction, I thought I should bring it to your attention.
I know that you are not into this type of thing, nor is it in you and most of members here. It could very well be that I am over reacting to it, seeing something that is not there. I am just giving you my 2-cents worth.

    Brother Kamau ... Good Morning,

That smiley has been here forever, and you're the first to ever mention this.

I'm not offended by it, i like it 'cause it is Black ... but since it offends you, let's see what the Family thinks.

I've started a poll above ... Does this smiley offend you? ... that will be open for 7 days ... and the Family vote will determine that smiley's end.

If the majority vote is offended by it, we'll delete it ... and if the majority vote is not offended, it gets to stay.

How 'bout that? :) ... be sure to vote! ... Everyone ...

PLEASE VOTE IN THE POLL ABOVE - POLL CLOSES IN 7 DAYS

    AND LEAVE YOUR COMMENTS BELOW

    Love You!

Probably has, but I just saw it for some reason this morning.
And as I said, it might just be me. But I also would like to think to know that I am a little familiar with the mindset of you, and know you would not allow something like it if it was offensive in any manner.
I appreciate you bring it to a vote as well.

Actually Brother Kamau ... some things here i've found personally offensive, yet let them remain ... challenging myself to consider the whole.

There have also been times a Member was incensed about something, and i didn't feel it at all ... in fact, they got even more upset, because i wasn't.

It goes all different kinda ways. We're so diverse, so many different levels of sensibilities present.

So Yeah ... let's watch how the vote goes ... it'll be interesting to see ... and i'm pull'n for da ol' black smiley! :D

    Love You!

Which is why I did not try to make it into an issue, and praying that it won't be made into someone's rallying cry. It's just something I saw and mentioned.
But at the same time, I have seen you step up to the plate when you found something that was insulting. that just means you do as we all should, and that is pick & choose your battles carefully. I don't feed off into everything negative I see because I see it all the time. I would literally be consumed by fights.
So I just fight some for now, except when it comes to my wife. That's called a "no-win-situation". :zipit:

I can see why this smiley would seem "questionable" to you, Bro, Kamau.

Out of all the smileys here, that one does stand out because it is the only one in Black; and "Blackface" is historically a racist invention to ridicule and demean Africans in parody.

Moreover, WE, Black people, also know that White supremacy has degraded the word "Black" by definition and connotation to equate with all things negative, for example, death and "Black Sunday." ..etc.. (with few exceptions as in business when "in the black" is positive)

We have also been conditioned to this in greater to lesser degrees; and we have to work toward battling that conditioning.

Frankly, I think Destee.com is a good place to start some of it.

If even more Black smileys were installed here, then we would not be offended by a black smiley but would embrace them.

In WHITE society, having a "Black heart" denotes an evil person....but what's wrong with having a "black heart" as a Black person who loves Black people?!

Red is the color commonly associated with "love."

But, I am a BLACK woman.

And I LOVE my People. [IMG]

So, let's not let a Black smiley make us go [IMG]

    Be not ashamed... [IMG]

    Be not confused...

I say, let's battle some of that conditioning in our own way with Black smileys!

So, is it still "questionable" to you, Kamau? [IMG]

    Love ya, Bro. Kamau! [IMG]

Sister CB, Thank you for that.
And Thanks, for not bringing a little "light" to the subject, but some 'black". It certainly did cause me to take a step or two back to see it a little differently.

    And Sister Destee, the mother-in-law thing.............naw :em4200:.
