Something that is not as vague as "work harder" because honestly, that can be said about anything.
Budgeting to reduce any debt (employers look at this unfortunately)
Trying to find jobs that offer a little bit of medical insurance can help too if possible. If you can't see about a state or local program to get into. Medical expenses can come along and wipe out all a person's hard work.
Take advantage of every program designed to help. That's what they're there for.
Investing in becoming skilled labor that's in demand (Higher education, skilled trades)
Hobbies can count towards this as well.
Re-locating. Some places are just limited in terms of opportunity and re-locating as early as possible can improve your odds.
Trying to get your foot in the door with temp agencies.
Starting a small side business
These are just off the top of my head. It's not easy to claw one's way out of the poverty trap. Being poor penalizes you in this society at every opportunity.
