    Stereotype

    What is it?

Stereotype – 2. a standardized mental picture that is held in common by members of a group and that represents an oversimplified opinion, prejudiced attitude, or uncritical judgment (Source: Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary – 10th Edition)

    Any truth to a stereotype?

Stereotypes usually have some basis in truth, although they can be wildly distorted or generalized to an entire population that is presumed to think and act exactly the same.

What are some of the stereotypes you hold about certain groups of people?

List one or more stereotypes for the groups below.

Then decide which of the stereotypes is most accurate for that particular group.

    Americans are…

    Whites are…

    Blacks are…

    Hispanics are…

    Asians are…

    Arabs are…

    Africans are…

    Homosexuals are…

    Republicans are…

    Democrats are…

    Racists are…

    Black men are…

    Black women are…

    Christians are…

    Jews are…

    Muslims are…

    Rich people are…

    Poor people are…

    Fat people are…

    Skinny people are…

    Tall people are…

    Short people are…

    Beautiful people are…

    Ugly people are…

What do some people assume about you?

Are any of their assumptions true?

Maybe we can open the BOX?

    You forgot..
    Heterosexuals are....
    Elders are...
    youth are...
    single mothers are...
    single fathers are....

why would it matter when its all a judgement; which is a sin. Though shall not judge but God. Point of the matter is... that is not of importants.. that is where so many negative perceptions come from in the first place. I honestly couldn't even answer those.. and i haven't made perceptions like dhat since highschool and my list still wouldn't be the high.

    Kind of like:
    Men are...
    Preaches are...
    Baptist churches are...
    Catholic churches are...

THAT LIST CAN GO ON... BUT?
Do you get where i'm getting at.... In the in end... it truly is a bias, discrimatory, judgemental factor.. and once again.. the only judge in the end... is God.. so who cares what they are.. or what they do.. as long as their negative influences.. don't affect you. Maybe you can even promote the positive side of the judgemental factors. I'm sorry i didn't answer your guestion.. but i was hoping i could step you outside of that box. Cause i can't lie.. i get caught in it myself.. but the Ten Commandments is my guide. I pray you utilize it as well.

By the way... remember your last 2 questions..
AOL KEYWORD: Assume:Makes an *** out of U and ME. Know what and who you are.. What you will and will not do... define it.. and never settle!!!!

What I posted is part of an excercise used to measure tolerance. It's used in the multicultural curriculum at my high school.

Many times, biases, prejudices, etc. are sowed when we are young. Some overcome them - some don't.

The trick is ferreting them out, acknowledging them and overcoming them.
