Why is it important to have a diverse workforce that is representative of the community served? Such as, having a diverse workforce in all Sears stores located in a city such as Chicago.

The above was provided by Ed L. McQuarters (aka ediversity) who will be hosting, guiding, leading this area of discussion. He sent this to me via email and I thought I'd post it (since I've created the forum and have it). Please Family, he's new here so make him feel welcome by taking part in the discussions, asking questions and sharing your thoughts.

    Say What!?

    diverse,
I understand your statement. However, if you apply it to the workplace, that means that the current situation with six Black men suing FedEx (in NY, I believe) for discrimination against their Locks hair style will be hard to win because, that particular hair style is against the "norm" at FedEx, apparently!

    Diversity in the workplace

IMO, diversity in the workplace is not required to get a job done. Businesses and corporations around the world have proven that. But, it is a good thing to do for many reasons. Diversifying the workplace began when civil rights laws in America were enacted to help break down employment barriers that locked people of color and women out of certain jobs or careers. We have affirmative action to thank for that. It's not been easy and the struggle continues, however now, thanks to a global marketplace,, successful corporations are finding it easier to compete when their workforce represents the communities that they serve. Successful businesses find it profitable and its been proven that employee satisfaction/morale increases when there's diversity in the workplace. So now, more and more companies are changing the faces of their workforce on a voluntary basis. Even though workplace diversity has been prompted by civil rights legislation and company profits, it's helping to redefine what's "familiar" and the perception of "norm".

    Haaaaaaaay Queeeeeeeenie

So glad to see you posting Sis !!! :spin:

I agree with you, diversity is happening in much part because the population is growing so much more diverse. I think too that the Internet has played (or is playing) a big part in this as well, by erasing geographic bounderies.

Hope all is well with you Queeeeeenie
