As indicated by MLK during his "I have a dream" speech the destiny of all Americans of all races are inextricably bound. It's apparent that many Americans of all races fail to realize this truth. During a live phone in discussion a couple of nights ago, among other things we were discussing the unemployment rate among Black teens, rather discrimination places them in a position where positive choices are not available to them, and rather their dress, appearance, or behavior contributes to their inability to get a job. One of the comments made (paraphrase) was why should our children have to look like them or basically assimilate to their culture in order to get a job? (Destee) Another comment indicated that concessions should be made on the part of the employer to allow for cultural differences. (Clyde) A business owner should be free to hire people who he/she feels will help advance the goals of his/her business. They should not be allowed to racially discriminate, but they should be able to discriminate against those with whom they feel conforms to an image that negatively effect the image of their business. As an example, sagging pants have a "thug" type image. We cannot expect a person who have invested their personal resources in starting a business to make concessions by hiring people they feel reflect negatively on their business. So we don't have to assimilate, but if we don't we must be willing to take full responsibility for hiring our own people. Our destinies are inextricably bound. We cannot restrict the freedom of business owners because a restriction of freedom for one is a restriction of freedom for all. We also have to acknowledge that our teens and young people are out of control right now. Something has to be done. If we are silent as they destroy and reek havoc on themselves and this nation and only express outrage when they are stereotyped/profiled we come off as hypocritical. We also have to acknowledge that allowing their destructive behavior to go unchecked only contributes to their negative reputation. If we are publicly making excuses for them rather than condemning their behavior, then expect people who have a for profit business to give them jobs we are in dreamland. During the last few months, Black teens have murdered an 88 year old WWII veteran, Shot a baby in the face during a robbery, participated in a murder of a Australian baseball player because they were bored, two Black teens raped a 12 year old White girl in Greenwood, Ms (Can you imagine how we would respond if the victim was Black and the perps were White??), and Black teens and young adults are killing each other like it's going out of style. Why do we ignore this stuff yet express outrage only when the assault is "them against us"? Our destiny is inextricably bound and fair is fair. I realize that they do the same thing. They express outrage when it's "us against them" yet defend the situation when it's "them against us", but our destiny is inextricably bound and fair is fair. As a nation, we have to express outrage when a wrong is done regardless of the race of the perpetrator or the victim. Because our destinies are inextricably bound, we have to realize that we are in a relationship with other races. No relationship will ever work well if one side or the other only cares about his/her best interest and do not care about what helps or hurts the other party in that relationship. This must be realized and acted upon by White people as well as Black people.
