If I could put you in the skin
of a blak man I'm not sure if
    you'd make it out alive

to be put in the skin of a blak man
is to experience, see what I have seen
and I'm not sure if you'd survive

to be in my skin you'd have
to feel the pain of the whips
smell the stench of slave ships
    and wipe the excrement off
    you cause Amerikkka dun went
    and **** on your existence

to be in my skin you'd have
to be biligual when you said
"yes, boss" learn how to extinguish
    burning crosses and swallow your
pride to save your family and chalk it
up as a loss no matter how persistent
    the anger

to be in my skin you'd have
stay strong in those fields of cotton
accept the fact that your huemanity
    was purposely forgotten and that
    you were CONsidered three-fifths of
    a man

to be in my skin you'd have to
"power to the people" in the face of death
with the knowledge that soon only
your family would be left to bury you

to be in my skin you'd have to accept the
reality that police brutality was no fallacy
but an abnormality in the belly of the beast
a tumor where the white house is protected

to be in my skin you'd have to feel the
mens' spirits that remained after they were
hung inhale the oxygen from the leaves of
the oak tree that inhaled the last breath
    from your brothers lungs

to be in my skin you'd have to understand face
    down and racial profiling
laser scopes and bodies piling up in the
hood like bullet casings in Attica
you have to understand that you are guilty
because you are black and male
and carry what scares the majority...
    dominent genes...and this targets you
as "Most Wanted" to be in this skin you
can't show that you're afraid to flaunt it

to be in my skin you have to endure the
heartbreak that parts of your soul dies everytime
a brother dies...especially at the hands of another...
brother...that makes the pill even more bitter to swallow
you have to be able to understand what it feels
like to feel completely hollow at times

to be in my skin you have to understand what
    hueman is.

Although we wear the same color skin....racism has affected the blak man at a much deeper and more damaging level. I know we blak women have been through so much, but in my heart and through my eyes I witness STILL the blak man being robbed of what he has a right to.....his right to simply live peacefully as a man. This poem moves my heart & soul. A very emotional and powerful piece. Thanks for the view through your eyes and those of the blak man before you.

    Eternal love & support
    CCBSKYN
