    if i came walking
    by romus simpson

    if i came walking
my gait still casual as senegal in the cool fire evening
pedestrian merchant on an ancient flowering road
new zealand moon in the fog of my hand
unfurled the riff of my body into your clear quiet sunday morning
& leaned into the yawn of your morning door
black, surreal, & ornate with the embroidery of the silver hour
resolute as the sea sits reflecting endless crescent shrill sun
like the wandering shadow of the yard oak meringues
times its cool desire hip first across the bay windows by light by love
sheds leaves hoping you finally notice its intellect
grows thick believing you love big men
sips the first bronze liquor of sky with elegant fingers

    like that simple hurried love
glancing in the window but hurried hurry love
make it to the world on time love
    arrive brilliant & informed love
the polite oak staying near your porch shrilling in the breeze
accelerated into the frenzy of its leaves & new sky
that small fire consuming the oak from the marrow
dreaming in the fettered luminous canopy
loveless & pious & quarantined in a hope of bark

if i come uncertain asking you to invite me in
like ethiopians invite poets to coffee & bade you talk talk
say anything love anything you feel love
then whirl around & fill your memory with accents
    lacquer you with perfumes
& the women whose husband is god
steal looks at you with their beautiful errorless eyes
they seduce poems from your throat
& you are citizen in jerusalem

by the slow waves of a radio sea
from a hand spread polynesian dawn
that lay flat as the world in namibia & as beautifully barren
message for you after months in the gulf stream
then west into west into a slow universe of sea
corridor of single sailed vessels gaining color in the orchard sea
then gone where language ends & the wandering world starts
international waters & sole ownership of my soul & hands
small translucent explosions littering the morning white
into the bright infinite eddy of your daylit eye

& like you bring blue things from grenada
a memory of slow rising god & sky filling with god &
the lack of fear seeing god come across the andes like weather
or pines & sequoias & their effort toward the face of god
extraordinarily tall negros in senegal that lean high into each picture frame
looking up into space in slow harmony dark greens & charcoal blacks
& from the roadside falling then blustering forth all at once between
birmingham and tuscaloosa night upon blue night & a decade of gentile stars
you witness love come make the land a flooding secret
then the highway at first dark through the temple of the indigo world
evangelic ache turning my heart north toward the infant gospel choirs of toronto
to listen to sit & nod & agree at each chorusing hallelujeah & clamor
to testify into the clamor at being alive & in love & hurrying hurrying
through the curious contingent of awesome shattered silences of moonlight
hurrying toward home at last on earth this profuse testament to love
this chant at 3 am moving across the withered face of texas
    nation
    hemisphere
    word

Man, what a painting! This poem is just bursting with visions of other people, times, and places. You describe everything so vividly and precise, as if you were the creator of the sea, the land, the people; like those classical painters manipulating each brush stroke upon the canvas to produce a desired affect or create a distinct look; convey a unique feel. This poem really takes the reader on a journey, beautiful and long, and far reaching. And as always your use of language is superb. I really love these lines:
"then west into west into a slow universe of sea
corridor of single sailed vessels gaining color in the orchard sea
then gone where language ends & the wandering world starts
international waters & sole ownership of my soul & hands
small translucent explosions littering the morning white
into the bright infinite eddy of your daylit eye"

For some reason those lines stick out in my mind, they just come together and fit so nicely.
You my friend have a masterful way with words.

    Thanks for the inspiration.
