In the Spirit of Food Sources,

If GMOs aren’t the problem with our food system, then what is?

I have a theory. It’s a theory about why we’re having such a misguided, unconstructive discussion about several hot-button food-related issues, GMOs first among them.

It begins with the premise that our food supply has some very big problems. Although any reasonable person acknowledges the things we do well — our farms are highly productive, our food is extremely safe — it’s easy, also, to see where we’ve gone wrong. Our agriculture has contributed to water-quality problems and soil erosion, among other issues. And our food supply is hard for us to navigate without getting fat; two-thirds of us are overweight or obese. We eat a lot of processed food and not a lot of produce. According to the Centers for Disease Control, 13 percent of us eat enough fruit, and 9 percent eat enough vegetables ...

Monsanto Handed ‘Double Whammy’ by Mexican Courts Over Planting GMOs

According to a report from Mexico News Daily, the ruling on Wednesday favored an injunction filed by Maya beekeepers on the Yucatán peninsula, where honey production and collection is its main industry.

“The decision suspends a permit granted to the agrichemical firm Monsanto to farm genetically modified soybeans on over 250,000 hectares in the region and instructs a federal agency it must first consult with indigenous communities before granting any future permits for transgenic soy farming,” the report said ...

Monsanto Handed 'Double Whammy' by Mexican Courts Over Planting GMOs

Opponents of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) have claimed victory after Mexico's Supreme Court blocked last week a move that would allow the cultivation of GMO soy in the Mexican states of Campeche and Yucatan. In a separate appeals court...

Dead meat, wheat/gluten, dairy in our diet is killing us. It's making doctors rich and the pharmaceutical companies rich with frequent doctor visits and a cabinet full of medicines that really aren't solving the problem, just masking them. Fully raw food/vegan diets may not be for everyone but eating more fresh vegetables (raw and uncooked) and fruit over meat and no products made from cow's milk could greatly improve our health and reduce (eliminate) our risk of certain cancers, diabetes, heart disease and obesity. Couple this with daily exercise for at least 20-30 minutes will help you feel better and look healthy.

Organic is not necessary for healthy eating but is expensive.

    The organic industry’s GMO hoax

... To be considered organic, among other things, products must be free of genetically engineered ingredients. After recognizing the threat this new technology posed to its industry, organic product manufacturers began to insinuate GMOs were somehow dangerous and demand labeling.

Ronnie Cummins, director of the Organic Consumers Association, admitted that scaring consumers into buying organic food was a marketing ploy, saying the first step to growing organic market share is to change labeling laws ...

The consumer has the right to know the ingredients of any product.

Nationwide GMO labeling is finally happening! Um, now what?

Someday we'll look back and say, "It all started with Vermont." The GMO food labeling movement has been going strong for several years, but the turning point was when the state of Vermont finally passed a law making GMO labeling mandatory.General Mills was the first to say it would label everything, everywhere (it's too hard to create boxes for just one state), followed by Kellogg, ConAgra, Campbell Soup and Mars. We are finally getting the transparency we've been asking for — at least as far as GMOs go.

The question now is, will this change the way we shop? ...

We asked for it. We got it. Now, are we going to actually read those labels?

GMO labeling is finally happening, but is it going to change the way we shop? We asked women around the country.

Toxic BPA Found in Majority of Canned Food Packaging

Canned food is a convenience that comes with a high toll on health if the plastic lining inside the can contains bisphenol A.

When a coalition of health and environmental advocacy groups tested 192 cans, randomly chosen from many retailers in Canada and across 19 American states, they found that nearly 70 percent contained BPA ...

The world's largest soup maker, Campbell Soup Company, has pledged to switch to cans free of Bisphenol A by next year, a chemical found in the lining of canned goods that has been linked to increased risk of hormonal changes, behavioral problems, cancer and heart problems.
