I was there when.. down south was...
"for whites and for colored only".

I was there when.. you could buy a back of gum for a nickel...
and believe me you wouldn't be alone.

I was there when.. we had to cover my white aunt with blankets...
to keep the troopers from seeing while we travel....
Because we knew we just might hear the gavel.

I was there when.. the pigs came into our hood...
    chasing a young brother.
And all would come out shouting "Mau Mau-Mau Mau"...
and ran them away..just so we could returned him to his mother.

I was there when.. they said we didn't deserve a higher education...
I was there also when we taught them a lesson.

I was there when.. they wouldn't let my parents vote...
I was also there..when we showed them they couldn't rock our boat.

    It's your turn.

I was also there through it all ...In spirit ...for I and my ancestors are connected.
Therefore, I was there when ...

    THANK YOU ALL...

Thank you all for responding yes the memories are still embedded in our minds some that are strong and some are not. The point is we that felt the sting on these experiences first hand must let others know that the struggle is still going on. Go ahead recall those memories of them so we can teach others that don't have them..because most just seem to think the struggle has not started. Share your wisdom while u are here with them. Don't wait until they read about you in books that someone else may or may not write. Don't wait until you become an ancester....do your work now.
