I WAS BLIND BUT NOW I CAN SEE
By Andre Austin
Out of the four Gospel writers we have Matthew, Mark, John and Luke. One of them is a physician, Luke. Luke might perhaps be a mythological eye-doctor because he writes down what others saw, an assertion that the others do not make. An eye doctor writes down what a patient can and can’t see too.
Luke can also be a pun for Look
Luke in Greek is Loukas which can be a pun for Leukomas an eye disorder for seeing white spots or clouds.
This is the foundation in which I approach Rev chapter 3:12-22 in dealing with a famous Lukewarm city/church of Laodicea. Laodicea had a famous medical school providing eye-care and other treatments. The medical school might have been a branch from Egypt because they minted coins with the image of Serapis with Imhotep, the world’s first known Physician. Serapis was modeled after Egyptian deities who spit in the eyes of the blind and made them see.
The Egyptian Tefnut-Maat was the first deity to deal with eye-care in mythology. Tefnut helped to save the eye (sun) of Ra by raising it in its proper place and order. However for a certain period of time the clouds of Tefnut obscured Ra’s vision for a period of time. Ah ha, I have a match. Could it be that the clouds of Tefnut runs a connection with the eye disorder of Leukomas being placed as a pun for Luke’s name in Greek (Loukas).
Tefnut was symbolic of Clouds, rain, dew, moisture, the heat of heaven and Maat. Maat is balance and justice a condition of Lukewarm between the Hot & Cold
The root of Tefnut’s name meant Spit, the manner in which she was born by being spit out. Is it a coincidence that Lukewarm is spit out. Lukewarm is classified as a deed so it can be a metaphor of a eye condition which is a behavior/deed. For example the NT states not to look at sawdust in other people’s eyes when you have a log in yours. Also those who do evil deeds haven’t seen God (3 John 11). I say that to dismiss nonsense claims that Lukewarm is about drinking water.
Everything ran as butter from then on. I went into the multi-volume exhaustive Oxford English Dictionary (2nd edition 1989). I looked up the front part of Leukomas and found some interesting results:
Leuk, form of look
Leuke, League, Luke, Lion
1. The Egyptian portrayed Tefnut in a league with eight other deities
2. Tefnut’s spit is linked with the spit of Lukewarm
3. Tefnut was a Lion headed deity
The church of Laodicea was Lukewarm but they were blind in need of salve for their eyes. You were blind in not being able to see the full context of Lukewarm in Rev chapter 3 but now you should be able to see and understand more better.
