    i saw them come.

    i saw them through a misty haze.
    i saw them coming,
    desperate pieces of tragedy;
    wary spoils of victory.
    coming triumphant and strong.
    coming bruised and limp.
    coming with vengence.
    coming with hatred.
    coming with love and with grace.

    i saw them through a misty haze.
    i saw them coming.
    i saw them bearing histories known,
    and histories unknown.
    bearing souls of people past,
    and of people not yet lived.
    i saw them bearing warning,
    and bearing hope.

    i saw them through a misty haze.
    i saw them coming.
    not batallions nor regiments.
    not villagers nor townsmen.
    not person nor people,
    but emotions and words,
    rhyme and verse.

    i saw them through a misty haze.
    i saw them come.
    they were ballads and sonnets,
    couplets, limericks and haikus,
    epics and free flows.
    they were poems,
    oh yes, they were poems.
    i saw poems coming and i saw them reach,
    and behind them there were poets;
    masters of word and phrase,
    guides through the misty haze.
