the near north
I sat there
Staring out…across
Histories {of anguish}
That brought me here

I wanted to share
{but} there was no one to hear
My story of
Misuse and abuse
Tormented spirits
Cry out at night
The plight of my
Forefathers
That robbed us
Of peace
During the early years of
This country ‘tis of thee

So…
I daydreamed an
Audience
And orated
A three-part trilogy
For all to hear and
See what they’ve done to me
I couldn’t let it be
It wasn’t for glory or fame
But whips and chains
And thousands of miles
Over waters of pain
We came
Across a barren sea
In shipboard dungeons
As anger
Raged in me

Shackled
Beaten
And forced below
Those who rested lay
Hundreds in a row

For sho’

When the silence of peace
Swept gently over me
And lasting sleep
Gave way
To destiny
I was tossed aside
Into the murky water’s
Deep
Shark meat
Food for their babies to eat

I was free
