I do remember……

If my life was a movie,
how would it go?
I think it would be smooth like R&B music
With a hip hop twist or tempo
Or electric like Ellington’s Jazz,
Or Hot like Fourth of July Sun ray’s
Or funky like Jimmy’s Purple Haze…
But life continues to amaze
Me and from time to time
I find a second to rewind
And remember…. when the sun had no shine.
And the taste was bitter from my glass of wine.
For these reasons
I am inclined to
Do like Michael Jackson
And remember the time.
I remember when fist fights were common on my block
Every once in a while you might here a gun shot,
But that was mostly on New Years Eve
When I heard
The boom boom from the Mosberg.
Back then you were the man
If you had the heat in your hand,
A little snub nose 22, or if you were really big
you were holding a 357 Mag, in the small of your back
And your target was any ***** who got out of hand
but that was rare
Cause a brotha stepping to a ***** packing?
He wouldn’t dare
**** I remember.
I remember the frost from the Hawk in December,
that coated our bedroom windows,
I remember the 10 foot drifts from the overnight snows,
I even remember Momma pulling off them covers……and my feet hitting that cold hard wood floor.
I remember the blue and green parka’s with the fur around the hood,
Embarrassed to be bundled up, as a kid I never understood.
I still can’t figure out how them women that walked up and down my street
with them heels on their feet,
Made it through all that snow, ice and sleet.
But I do remember.
I remember the bones rolling on the corner lookin for that 7 or 11
Straight ghetto heaven.
Watchin the honey’s with the thick gloss on them lips
And the tight jeans that hugged them hips, smile and giggle at brothas getting their roll on.
I do remember.
And as the time moved on
So did the lyrics of my hip hop songs
they changed from the roof is on fire,
To packing a 9 is my desire
And the flame from the gun was hotter,
A fine lady with tight jeans?
**** I’m trying to spot her
Cause now they got on the hipsters
and the Thongs.
So maybe the lyrics to these new hip hop songs
Ain’t all that wrong…..
But anyway As I remember the changes on the street.
I remember the fresh smell of rain hitting the concrete
and the sound of the bullets raining up the street.
I remember the hot plate that heated the water for our bath.
The numbers on the bill got to high……so we did without gas
Seems like it was for a short while, but a long time it did last. Maybe that’s why
I remember the month of December.
I remember a bullet hole in our living room wall,
I remember how we just laid still when it hit, like it didn’t bother us at all.
I remember 5:00 going to the court to shoot some ball.
Straight breaking brothas ankles, either short or tall.
Seems like it was just the other day, when I would say. “who got next”, but now them rims are gone, replaced by a concrete cemetary for legends Who would make me smile
Now there ain’t nothing but empty crack viles
That fill the isles to the arena where I once played..
I remember the good out weighd the bad, I remember momma making do with what she had, and no matter what the situation was I remember we were happy, because God and momma wouldn’t let us be sad.
Momma I do remember.
Peace
