During a time, too close
for comfort,
I couldn't breathe.
I tried to think logically,
but I couldn't breathe,
so common sense eluded me.
Intellectually I bore no fruit,
I couldn't breathe,
learning was mute.
Wedding vows became a curse,
there wasn't any better,
just an abundance of worse.
I couldn't breathe,
and became a shell,
of the creative soul
you've come to know so well.
My essence, slowly
plunging into a chasm,
begging to be released from
a sentence too long to fathom.
It was screaming, it was crying,
God only knows
how I kept it from dying.

I returned to the other side,
seemingly unscathed,
filled with victorious pride.
But despite the gold laden muse
that fate couldn't sever,
I mourn for those precious
diamonds that are gone forever.
