I did not ask for your friendship
You did not ask for mine
But separated we are
The very blood of my ancestors
delineates every blocked line

Pray tell,
What specific gene causes my subordination?
And in truth, I did not even ask for your aid
For I am the Original Man fashioned upon Creation
Yet I've been counted as only 3/5ths of what God made

Did the Creator make a mistake
When He engineered my lovely hue
Literally composed from the dusky soil?
Does my very design excuse
Four Hundred years of death and toil?

Truly, I cannot forget nor ignore
The Past and Present prejudice
Inflicted by my paler nemesis
Now, no, I don't seek retribution
For my People's persecution
But neither can I offer absolution

I strive to no man hate
But yet I cannot wipe the slate
Nor erase the blot of racism's stain
Only my Lord can cleanse it
When He comes again.
