I am woman
And my body tells a story
My skin may feel smooth but it's really made of armor
Harder than what the human touch can feel
It might encounter damange, but we were made to endure things like
Stetchmarks left by long painful histories
Of giving birth to a world that wants to exclude me
Bruises and black eyes by men who abuse me and
Hickies of weaknesses when I let him use me
Insecurity had my face draped in make up
So I could fit into the top category of beauty
Where surgery could never cover these wrinkles of experience
Or the tear lines of sacrifice
As dirty fingerprints scrubbed my flesh
When my innocence was his only price
My chest surrounds the hole where my heart used to be
Replaced and taken over and over again
When emotion overpowers the strength of a woman
Broken feet trying to fit into small heels
So I can feel more important than she feels
Because we women have the misconception
To always be in competition with each other
Instead of healing each others' scabs from persecuted pasts
My children made me shed off dead skin
Because I had to peel away the child in me at sixteen
I crack my nails when I try to rebuild lost self esteem
Rashes of broken dreams itch, but I can't scratch them
A black woman just copes and has to move passed them
Even though she's stronger than the last man
Because when he's not able to carry the world, she'll carry it for him
God created her because He knew man
Could not love himself the way a woman can
And He created an entire world to understand that
We are human
While our bodies tell stories
Our souls publish them
So if we read them, we'll see
How we are beautifully human
And no matter how you may view men
We all make mistakes every day
But I'm glad to be made in the image
Of a Father who'll love me anyway
