An examination of the writings of Jared Diamond.
First off, Jared Mason Diamond is an evolutionary biologist. I first heard of him from the very profound documentary and book "Guns, Germs and Steel" - also in this book is a chapter titled "How Africa Became Black." I was introduced to this chapter by a friend that argued with me that Africans were the George Jeffersons of the known world at one point. "George Jeffersons?" I asked. Right. We slammed doors in people's face and kicked them out. I guess "Martin" did that too. Us? African people?? And some people say this is why we are hated now?
I believe "Guns, Germs and Steel" is some fascinating work, yet it still comes from the European mind- and if true- is this something we are willing to accept? That Africa was not always black, but it became Black because "we" grew to dominate Africa and overpower all others, kicking them out to the sidelines? Running folks out of town?
While Diamond does not suggest this exactly, one could be led to assume that was the case.
How Africa Became Black
Africa's racial history was not necessarily its racial destiny. To unravel the story of Africa's past, you must not only look at its faces but listen to its languages and harvest its crops.
by Jared Diamond
Most Americans think of native Africans as black and of white Africans as recent intruders; and when they think of Africa's racial history they think of European colonialism and slave trading. But very different types of peoples occupied much of Africa until as recently as a few thousand years ago. Even before the arrival of white colonialists, the continent harbored five of what many consider to be the world's six major divisions of humanity, the so-called human races, three of which are native to Africa. To this day nearly 30 percent of the world's languages are spoken only in Africa. No other continent even approaches this human diversity, and no other continent can rival Africa in the complexity of its human past.
