gaydar – an inner 'radar' that allows you to distinguish between straight and gay males or females.

Can YOU tell who's gay or not gay?

An inner 'radar' that allows you to distinguish between straight and gay males/females? How does this work and for what purpose?

I guess mine is terrible. There are always females hitting on me. I may be too friendly because initially I'm thinking she is just a friendly black woman and next thing I know things take a detour! I'm a lot more careful now, but Seattle has a lot of lipstick lesbians, they are harder to single out than dyke looking women.

The gaydar of most gays and lesbians is pretty good, but that of straight people's is usually not as good unless they're highly evolved.

    Why do you ask?

    On The Flip Side

I seem to be able to spot Gay men a mile away. This trips my friends out. But there are subtle things about a man's mannerisms or way of dressing that tends to give him away. This is not always blatant, sometimes its that you never see his head turn to watch a woman walk...which most men DO.

    What's the point?

I've never heard this term, "gaydar" before. I still ask the question for what purpose does anyone want to spot or identify a gay person?

    Peace :spinstar:

It is not that anyone "wants" to identify a gay person, NNQueen - it just happens.

African-Americans can readily identify one another, which allows for public acknowledgement, aka the inside head nod or "what's up" in situations where there aren't a lot of other blacks around. This fosters feelings of community and something shared, as opposed to feeling alone. Similarly, gay people's ability to identify one another also leads to acknowledgement in settings where the majority of others are heterosexual. This bonding gives a sense of comfort in that setting, similar to other situations where one finds oneself the minority.

    Why do you ask?

I asked because the mother of a family friend has been diagnosed with the HIV virus. Her boyfriend has admitted that he has been sleeping with men and women since high school. No one had a clue about his secret life.
