Horsemeat scandal exposes complex food chain

On Monday, Romanian officials scrambled to defend two plants implicated in the scandal, saying the meat was properly declared and any fraud was committed elsewhere. (AP Photo/Vadim Ghirda)

LONDON (AP) — First, there was "pink slime." Then horsemeat. Most recently? "Desinewed meat."
Recent revelations that such products have reached dinner tables, including horsemeat falsely labeled as beef in Europe, have cast an unappetizing light on the global food industry.

Very good question, but I would have to say yes it would matter. But here's the problem, according to the article:

Horsemeat is not generally considered unsafe to eat, but the scandal has triggered disgust in places such as Britain where it traditionally is not eaten and anger over the mislabeling of food products.

To be on the safe side, folks will just have to eat fish and chicken...there is no fish that can look like horse meat.
This is so obnoxious. It shows that for the love of money people would do anything. The thought of eating meat from a horse would make one want to puke. I do not eat lamb nor beef so the red meat will not be a problem...I focus on fish and chicken. Wonder if some of this meat has been exported to folks here in the Caribbean:(

CASTELNAUDARY, France/AMSTERDAM (Reuters) - The president of French meat processor Spanghero promised on Friday to disprove allegations that his firm knowingly sold horsemeat labeled as beef, and accused the government of being too quick to point the finger.
In a widening scandal involving horsemeat in ready meals sold across Europe, Dutch inspectors began taking samples to discover whether shipments contained a drug given to some horses that is banned for animals intended for human consumption.

Some of the fish is tainted with mercury. I guess the vegetarians are having a field day smiling at meat eaters.

Gurl...the vegetables are filled with pesticides too. I try to focus on fish and chicken....just can't take peas and husk every day. Vegetarianism is not for me. I love my onions, garlic, olive oil, curry, tomatoes and something with a bone on it.;) Something savoury must go into dis mout.:lol:
