Senior Obama campaign officials defend president’s embrace of super PAC

Obama officials will appear publicly with super PAC organizers throughout the campaign season, but they will not make direct fundraising requests on behalf of the group. Also, the president and First Lady will not appear at any events sponsored by Priorities USA. (Romney has attended fundraising events for Restore Our Future, the super PAC supporting his candidacy.)
"With so much at stake, we can't allow for two sets of rules in this election, whereby the Republican nominee is the beneficiary of unlimited spending and Democrats unilaterally disarm," Messina said, echoing comments Obama made when Priorities USA was established last year by a group of the president's former aides. Messina noted that the campaign would comply with all laws and regulations governing super PACs.

After Rick Santorum's Sweep, How Worried Should Mitt Romney Be?

"After Florida [Romney] thought he had gotten engaged and a wedding date was set and the voters gave him his ring back and said 'We're going to flirt with this guy from Pittsburgh for a while,'" Dowd said on "GMA." "I mean it's an amazing turn of events for Mitt Romney. He thought he had this done."

After Rick Santorum's Sweep, How Worried …
I put that question to ABC News’ political contributor Matt Dowd this morning. …

.......For those interested, here's the run down on tonight's GOP debate in Mesa, AZ; it promises to be a barn-burner, lol:

CNN Arizona Republican debate tonight at 8pm ET

BY NATE, ON FEBRUARY 22ND, 2012
CNN will be broadcasting a Republican debate Wednesday night from the Mesa Performing Arts Center in Mesa, Arizona. All four GOP candidates will be participating in this crucial shootout just six days prior to the Arizona and Michigan primaries on February 28. This will also be the final debate prior to the Super Tuesday contests on March 6 now that the March 1 debate has been canceled.
Air Time: Wednesday, February 22 at 8pm ET on CNN
Live Stream: CNN.com
Participants: Gingrich, Romney, Santorum, Paul
Report from CNN:

As it stands now, this debate will focus on Santorum and Romney since they are neck-and-neck in both Michigan and Arizona. Recent polls showed Santorum with a substantial lead in Michigan, however, it appears he may have come down off the bounce and the race is tightening again. Arizona has moved the other way for Santorum where Romney held the lead literally for years in polling, however, recent polls show a difference of only a few points.

Have the Republicans Already Lost?

Top Line
Yes, it's only February. Eight months from election day. And so it's true that it is ridiculous to suggest this race is really over. But as of this moment, it does not look good for the Republican party caught up in a messy primary battle that often looks more like a circular firing squad.
And as ABC News Political Director Amy Walter points out, Mitt Romney's ugly win in Michigan last night didn't help matters. Sure, a win is a win. But the Romney campaign's greatest strength has been eviscerating opponents, not making a strong case for Mitt Romney. "They figure out what the weakness is of their top opponent, they go in there spend a lot of money and do a lot of negative ads, and exploit whatever that weakness is. The problem with that is they don't' ever build themselves up," Walter says.
The Obama campaign benefits from the protracted Republican primary, but also from an improving economy. As Yahoo! News' David Chalian points out, that not only helps the president but also steals the thunder from Romney's main campaign theme. "If Mitt Romney is Mr. Fix It on the economy, but the guy who's sitting in the Oval Office is actually fixing the economy right now, then where does Mitt Romney go from there?"

With the economy improving, only high gas prices stand as an obstacle to Mr. Obama's re-election...

.......A sample of what could possibly happen at the GOP convention as the Republicans attempt to select a nominee to run against President Barack Obama:

To derail Romney at Tampa convention, change the rules

Well, I bring you good tidings. If Romney has not secured the nomination by the time the delegates convene in Tampa, Fla., at the end of August, the prospects for a genuine floor fight are greater than you might imagine. The reason is that delegates who are bound or pledged to a candidate are only obligated to follow his wishes when it comes to voting for a nominee. And in most contentious conventions, it is a fight over the rules that has effectively determined the nominee.
