A co-worker told me the other day that her younger sister had decided to become a stripper. The younger sister is only 17, and my coworker was so quick to say " well I can't do anything about it, she's grown." And I am wondering as a woman why wouldn't she talk to her sister and try to encourage her to do something better than stripping.

Why is it that women don't encourage other women to try and acheive higher goals in life?

Hey sexe1! Sister, do you know this to be a fact or are you speaking of your co-worker's actions alone?

I think that women in general have demonstrated time and time again how supportive they are of each other. I know for a fact that Black women can be extremely supportive of and offer encouragement to each other. Many of us wouldn't be where we are today if it wasn't for a woman somewhere offering us encouragement and guidance. Look at the number of support groups there are in our communities. Look at the professional organizations designed to help women in all statures of life. Women aren't perfect, but they can be extremely supportive and can be the best cheerleaders.

Now, as far as your co-worker goes, who knows what all she's done when you're not around, to encourage her younger sister. I'm sure she hasn't told you everything that goes on between them. And just because she said what she did about her sister's career choice, doesn't mean she hasn't offered her encouragement to choose a different path.

And you know what sexe1? This is just my humble opinion but I firmly believe that sometimes it's best to allow a person to make their own choices even when we think we know better. This is how many people learn and become strong. Being a stripper is not the worst profession in the world and if she survives, who knows--maybe she'll decide on her own that it's not the career for her.

Peace!
