I just joined the community today so I wanted to say hello. I wasn't aware of the site until I was searching for topics related to incest and the African American community. I was so pleased to read the posts. Feels good to know there are some Black folks who get it. Get that it happens in our community at an epidemic level. Get that this is not an individual problem but a community problem! Get that as long as sexual abuse of our children continues, our community will never reach its full potential. I'm happy I'm not the only person who gets it. I am a survivor, advocate and community organizer around the issue of incest and child sexual abuse in the African American community. I started my organization Nirvana Now! years ago following talking with hundreds of Black women who had been sexually abused as children by anybody you can think of. I was horified. At the time I foolishly thought my friend and I may have been the only ones. I have done this work now for over 20 years. Believe me when I tell you I have definitely taken many hits from our people who don't want the topic discussed. But still I continue. As you know, it takes all of us to speak out in whatever way we can. I plan to share more about what I am doing to help the cause and issues as they come up. I have attached an article I wrote for the Toledo Journal some time ago which is unfortunately still relevant. In the meantime, if you would like to know a tad more about me and my efforts, feel free to visit my website,mynirvananow.org. Peace.
