Harriet Tubman (Black Moses)

Had a foolish student embracing the popular disrespect of Harriet Tubman (who freed over 300 slaves) popularized by Russell Simmons. This student said he would have been upset too if Tubman would have left them behind. Foolish young grasshopper. According to my research: “She {Tubman} would never allow more to join her than she could properly care for, though she often gave others directions by which they succeeded in escaping”.-The Narrative of Harriet Tubman. Cited in book The underground Railroad: dramatic first-hand accounts of Daring escapes to Freedom. by Charles L. Blockson p.105

Harriet Tubman was born in 1820 and died in 1913. She was illiterate and had a physical disability when he skull was fractured when hit with an iron object by a white overseer. She endured her entire life with narcolepsy, a sleep disorder which creates migraines and illusions. She called slavery; “The next thing to hell”. She carried a pistol on her hip. If any escaped slave got tired and refused to continue she pulled out her gun and said: “You go on or you die, Dead ******* tell no tales”. She was supposed to have lead a slave revolt with John Brown but suffered another episode with her narcolepsy.
During the Civil war she worked as a nurse and spy for the Union army. In 1898 she sued the United States government for her back pay and pension for her services to her country. The Senate agreed to pay her $25 dollars a month but it was reduced to $5 a month. Recall that during slavery in the 1840’s the yearly support of a slave was $35 dollars a year which included $8-15 for food, $ 3 clothes, taxes, medical, housing (The Peculiar Institution By Kenneth stamp p.406.
Speaking of pensions, a slave once quoted Lincoln: “I was looking right in Linktum’s (Lincoln’s) mouth when he said, ‘The colored man is turned loose without anything. Iam going to give a dollar a day to every Negro born before Emancipation until his death-a pension of a dollar a day’. That’s the reason they killed him. But they sure didn’t get it”.-Lay my burden Down:A folk History of Slavery Edited by B.A. Botkin p.25. Too bad Lincoln’s suggestion of equality and compensation didn’t extend to black people in general or to Harriet Tubman individually.
America has never settled its account for the civil and human rights violations against African-Americans, or Native Americans. Tubman would die broke and in pain in 1913 as she lived as a slave and so-called freewoman living in a whiteman’s heaven which she defined as, “The next thing to hell”, for black folks.
