HARLEM OF MY TIME
There's no other place I rather be, but HARLEM
The past still echoes, whispering OURSTORIES
Harlem of Arthur Shomburg, Carlos Cook, Malcolm,
Dr. Clarke, Dr. Ben & Sister Camille
Harlem with its exquisite mix of flavors
As diverse as the different hues of our folks
Spicy Harlem, with its jerk seasoning, rice & peas
Ahhh, nothing but roots ---West Indian Harlem
Sylvia's Southern Flavors w/ candied yams, greens &
Cornbread, accentuating traditional Soul Food
'El Barrio' with its 'Marketas' & 'Botanicas'
Impressing upon us a cornucopia of flavors:
Pasteles, Pernil - Asao, Mofongo & Alcapurrias,
Accompanied by the summer's Conga beat
'Prukutun, prukutun, pa - pa -pa'
'Dominican Harlem', extending along upper Broadway
With its sidewalk merchants 'pregonando' delicacies
From the island home; enpanadas de Yuca, 'Mangu' &
fried cheese w/ 'salchichon' on the side
With a chilled glass of Morir SoÑando,
Nothing but pure early morning daily ritual
Weekend of Merengue fury & 'Bachata down'
All night Barcelo rum romps
Sancocho & Mondongo 'para curar todo el mal'
These are the rhythms pulsating from the
HARLEM OF MY TIME.
