    A man of his times
    Ahead of his time
    His ink observant, passionate, sympathetic
    A reflection of his life
    Our life
    Life as it was
    Life as it is

    He would be 100 today
    A timeless writer
Full of all the emotions that make up his art
    Pain and sorrow
    Joy and happiness
    The dark
    The light
    Every shade in-between

    Lyrical operas
    Discussed, appreciated, enjoyed
    Preserved in the spoken word
The written word he lived to express

    Happy Birthday
    Langston Hughes

Thank you Poets for joining me in this celebration. I find it beautifully ironic that his birthday is on the first day of "Black History Month." He told our story. The best of it and the worst of it...and as Alyce says...He was one of us.
