Gunman suspected of killing 8 had just been forced to resign
    By the CNN Wire Staff
    August 3, 2010 9:59 p.m. EDT

Manchester, Connecticut (CNN) -- Omar Thornton, 34, walked into a room early Tuesday at the beverage distributorship where he worked in Manchester, Connecticut.

Company and union officials played a video. He calmly watched images that purportedly showed him stealing from a truck.

An employee of Hartford Distributors for two years and a driver for one, Thornton was given a choice of resigning or being fired, union and company officials said.

He signed a resignation paper, was escorted out of the room and toward the door. He asked for a drink of water, company CEO Ross Hollander told CNN. That's when all hell broke loose. Thornton pulled out a handgun and began firing, officials said.

Within minutes, the gunman and eight other people were dead, and two others were wounded, according to Manchester police and a union official. Police swarmed to the scene, but never had a chance to talk with Thornton, who apparently shot himself to death in an office.

The shootings left the company, city and state in shock. Relatives and acquaintances said Thornton was known for his steady demeanor.

"My heart and prayers go out to the employees and families of the victims," Gov. M. Jodi Rell said in a statement. "In the wake of this tragedy, we are all left asking the same questions: How could someone do this? Why did they do this? It was a senseless act of violence that has left us all shaken. ..."

As police investigate the shootings and prepare to identify its victims, the company will meet with employees, some of whom have been with Hartford for 30-40 years.

A girlfriend of Thornton indicated he was a victim of racial harassment at the beverage center, the mother of the girlfriend told CNN.

Thornton told his girlfriend he had reported to a company supervisor and a union representative about the harassment but they did nothing about it, Joanne Hannah said Tuesday.

You have got to be kidding me. If this guy had been
white, Hispanic, Asian, Indian, anything other than black everyone would have been raising cane, about what the animals are capiable of doing. But he was black so this is all you can come up with??

Back to the excuses we find for what is done.

Well, pardon me, but I think I'll save my tears.

Here was a 34 y/o Black man with a WHITE girlfriend living in a town with a half million population and over 80% White working at a predominately WHITE job which is probably THE major employer in the area.

I do not doubt he received some racial harassment.

However, that "closed door" meeting with the alleged video of him stealing was the nail in his coffin. (no pun intended)

Reading between the lines, I feel pretty confident that the company "powers-that-be" gave him a choice between resignation OR be fired AND have criminal charges pressed against him for the theft.

So, again, pardon me while I save my tears. My compassion is for the families of those he killed.

But, he knew before he got to work that day that he was gonna be fired. This whole massacre was premeditated. He had already prepared by bringing the gun and ammo to work.

He took a coward's way out.

Pardon me while I save my tears.

I don't care if he was 34 or 43, Black or White, with a Black or White girlfriend, in a town of over 80% Black or White people working at a Predominately Black or White job, I will save my tears for him also. ESPECIALLY if there was video of him STEALING.

Likewise, I do not doubt he received some racial harrassment. Just a theory, but he probably felt he was retaliating against the company for not doing anything about his harrassment by stealing and got busted. If they had video evidence of him STEALING, they were actually doing him a favor by allowing him to resign as opposed to firing or even criminally prosecuting him.

Unless he selectively killed SPECIFIC individuals who took specific actions harrassing him, he is just a murderer who took the lives of innocent people. Even if he had selectively killed, it would be wrong, but somewhat understandable but from the sound of things, looks like he just planned a mass murder in response to being busted commiting a crime of theft.

I'm just sayn, FS....At 34 y/o, I just don't really think that having lived in this city or surrounding area or working at that company was the first time he'd ever encountered racism or called "the n-word."

And being in an inter-racial relationship IN that city was sure to eventually be known at his workplace.

So, that, coupled with the racism already present at that company did not bode well for him being one of only a few Black men employed at that company.

Surely, at 34 y/o he didn't have such "rose-colored glasses" on to think that he would not encounter some racism at this job.....He'd only been there TWO years, anyway.

Surely, THIS job was not the FIRST time he'd experienced workplace racism in all his years of employment by the age of 34.

I mean, Jeez!... I was raised in the South...Back in the 70s, in school, I got called the "n-word" and even SPAT at by a White person.....Now, YES, I did BEAT the White boy would said and did it like he stole from my Mama; but that's beside the point. :D

But, I didn't go on a killing rampage. No, I got busy with the White boy who said it/spat at me. And he cut me a very WIDE path ever after. He wouldn't even look me in the eye after that when he saw me in the hall!

Now, I don't know if he behaved so with any other Black people after that beat-down I gave him, but he was sho' nuff real quiet around me!

But, we're on the same page on the rest of your post.

    MECA or Madness!

Dating white women, assuming, quasi-bridging of a racist divide through romance alters truth or discovering that your bedmate, cannot protect you from the irrational hatred of those practicing racism white supremacy, does not set the stage for using maximum emergency compensatory action.
Curiously, had this brother truly practiced counter-racism, I would be concerned with the responses made here by some.
One thing is sure, as a collective Brother Thomas’s; action has created some dissension, while at the same time offered a revelation.
Maybe the suspect white supremacist in Jena, LA, or in the law enforcement offices of Oakland, and New York City, will take note that unlike the hundreds of whites smiling 'at' the lynching of Isaiah Washington decades ago, every suspect white supremacist in the photo acknowledges their heartfelt support for his murder, we are quick to judge this brother and find his action unjust. Appears that racist white supremacist do not do the same soul-searching when blacks are in the bulls eye of the gun the ends a life.
    RIP Omar.
At least you allowed your violence to end with you, Contrarily, suspect white supremacist can count on us to rally behind them when the shoe is on the other foot. For Shame!
