Were anyone ever involved in street gangs?

    Ever sold or did drugs?

Never finished high school or got a GED?

    Been incarcerated?

What happened to make you change?

My teenage years were pretty typical of the young Black male statistics. I was a gangbanger (52 Hoover Gangster Crip gang member) and did everything that comes with the street life. I lost 4 very close friends before 92 and 1 brother; two of my other brothers have been shot. I dropped out of high school. I got my first gun at 13 and had a penchant for violence. I should be dead.

At age 19, someone invited me to an African History study group held at a local Black bookstore and the rest is history.

Yeah. I used to bang, but not really hard. From WS to UGC; ran with some 60s and PBG's; sold only weed and smoked a lot in them days.

I changed when I went back to grad school and my daughter was born. Moved away from the set and got my head on straight. Too many homies, young and old was getting locked up or shot down with the gang injunctions. Was that black bookstore the Aquarian?

Wow uncle, I would have never known. The gang injunctions knocked off a lot of people.

Nope, it wasn't the Aquarian. Remember I am from Louisiana, but Cali gangs have had a presence there since the early 80's with some even in the late 70's. So many have family ties with California and parents used to send their troubled kids back home to the South to escape the street life in Cali. Tookie was from Shreveport and Raymond Washington's father was from nearby. I been to the turf in Cali when I was active. The gang activity got so bad in the late 80's that laws were passed that gave someone an automatic 10 years for pointing a gun out a car window.

I brought this thread up because people sometimes pass judgment and are unaware of the realities out there that get people caught up and the reasons that makes this whole thing work. I think those sensible people who actually have been exposed to this type of life and experienced it first hand have a better insight on how to stem the tide.

I agree totally. I had to let many so called grassroots organizations go because they were to scared to get in the trenches and do some real organizing. But that's another story. I grew up at a time before the CRIP and Blood sets emerged and was in junior high when they started federating so I was lucky that I had kinfolk who at least tried to set my head on straight.
